Brake angry over ministers speed camera comments

22 June 2010

Road safety charity Brake has expressed concerns over comments made by the junior transport minister regarding speed cameras.

In a parliamentary debate, Mike Penning said councils would have to use their own resources if they wanted to install new speed cameras as the government will no longer provide funding.

He also called on local authorities to look at other methods to improve road safety, describing speed cameras as cash cows.

Reacting to the announcement, the deputy chief executive of Brake, Julie Townsend, said: It is shocking to hear the new minister making such dismissive comments about speed cameras, which research proves they are highly effective in preventing deaths and injuries.

She said that Brake is often contacted by people who want the charity to provide funding for speed cameras as they believe it deters people from speeding.

Crucial road safety improvement measures such as cameras, traffic policing and better education are needed in the UK, Ms Townsend added.

Brake is a registered charity which aims to reduce the number of road deaths that occur worldwide.ADNFCR-290-ID-19847124-ADNFCR

Audi is most popular German brand

22 June 2010

Car manufacturer Audi is the most popular German brand with UK drivers, a new poll has revealed.

More than 26,000 MSN Cars website users were polled and asked which their favourite German car brand was.

Some 29 per cent of the internet users chose Audi, closely followed by 23 per cent who picked the BMW.

Surprisingly, only 16 per cent of those in the survey chose Porsche as their favourite manufacturer.

Commenting on the survey, Tom Evans, content manager of MSN Cars, said Audi has a rapidly expanding range, aspirational marketing, its own dedicated dealerships, and halo models like the R8 supercar.

All this has in the past few years helped Audi to become the German brand many people seem to aspire to.

Recently, two BMW models won accolades at the Environmental Transport Associations Green Car of the Year 2010 awards.

The greenest off-road car was voted as being the BMW X1 E84 and the BMW 740d took the title of greenest luxury car.ADNFCR-290-ID-19849569-ADNFCR
